Welcome to Fugue Software's Document Publisher suite. The purpose of this
suite is to enable the publishing of documents on the web (or CD-ROM) and
allowing legitimate viewing of these documents, while preventing other pe
ople
from plagiarizing your work.
The Publisher suite consists of two programs, the Publisher program itsel
f
(EBK Publisher), and the Viewer program (EBK Viewer). They are available
for
Windows 3.x (16 bit version) and Windows 95 or NT (32 bit version).
CREATE YOUR OWN BOOKS
=======================
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) has become the standard for publishing
documents, both on the World Wide Web and CD-Roms, and is also used for m
any
application help files. Why? Because it is platform independent, and the
document format is not proprietary to any software company, unlike most w
ord
processor formats.
However, there are some drawbacks with using plain HTML.
1. The documents can be easily downloaded into someone's word processor
,
and your hard work suddenly becomes their own copyright work. Sure,
copyright law is international, but unless you have the money to run a
court case, you could lose out. Of course, there's nothing to stop a
plagiarist from changing things around enough to beat any copyright act
ion.
2. Even if people don't just rip off your documents, hackers can modify
them and repost them unless they are on a read only medium like a CD-RO
M.
How do you know that the HTML files you got from the web are actually t
he
ones that the author uploaded? Mostly they will be, but you can't tell.
3. A web document is broken into pages. In addition, good design uses
frames to ease navigation, plus graphics to enliven and illustrate the
text. This can mean that a 150 page document might have 400 or 500 file
s to
distribute, which can be a nightmare to coordinate.
Help is at hand. The Publisher suite from Fugue Software permits all the
associated files for web pages to be packaged up into a single file (EBK
File), which is encrypted. A viewer that supports standard HTML v3 is als
o
supplied to view the documents within these encrypted files.
Thus there is only one file to distribute, containing all the files for y
our
HTML documents. You don't have to worry about losing one file, or clutter
ing
up the user directory with several hundred HTML and graphics files.
The Publisher program can create and modify these files, as well as view
the
contents, but it cannot extract the contents to disk. In addition the
publisher file is encrypted so that it cannot simply be loaded into a wor
d
processor. This makes it extremely difficult for someone to rip off your
content.
In addition, you can password protect individual documents in a EBK file,
so
that people viewing your published EBK cannot view protected files withou
t
the password you supply them.
Each copy of the Publisher program includes a signature that identifies t
he
registered owner. Anyone modifying a publisher file using their own
registered copy or Publisher will leave their own signature in any files
they
change. Even the shareware copy will leave a signature, but you should al
ways
be cautious of files released with the shareware copy, because anyone els
e
with the shareware copy will leave the same signature.
The file is encrypted, so anyone trying to make changes using a hex edito
r
will be thwarted. Changes to just one byte of the file will corrupt the
encrypted data, making it impossible to decrypt the file.
The viewer supports standard HTML v3.0 (v3.2 support will be out soon)
including frames, GIF, JPG, BMP and PNG graphics formats, WAV and AVI
multimedia formats.
It is now possible to publish electronic books using the Publisher suite
from
Fugue Software.

purchased Publisher Suite, or if Publisher Suite was purchased by your
employer, that you have your employer's explicit permission to install
Publisher Suite on two systems as described in this paragraph. The right
to install one copy of Publisher Suite on two computers is limited to

===== About VENDINFO Files =============================
Each VENDINFO.DIZ file contains extensive information about a product.
This "human-readable" section is followed by a compressed data record
useable by automated tools. The data record allows BBSes and other
distributors to automate package handling, and provides users with a
wealth of product information. VENDINFO tools (free viewer for users,
free or inexpensive processors for distributors, editors for authors)
are available from many sources, including the originators of VENDINFO:
